The Black Angels live experience

Opening the set with “Currency” from their new album Death Song, the Black Angels brought psychedelic rock to the Newport Music Hall on May 10. The Black Angels’ signature sound consists of dark, haunting lyrics and dirty guitar. The band is heavily influenced by the Velvet Underground, and it’s easy to hear memories of Jim Morrison and David Bowie in their music.

Consisting of lead singer Alex Maas, Stephanie Bailey on drums, Kyle Hunt on keyboard and guitar, guitarist Christian Bland and bassist/keyboardist Jake Garcia, the Black Angels played 19 songs from all their albums, including “You on the Run” from Directions to See a Ghost, “Bad Vibrations” from Phosphene Dream, “I Hear Colors” from Indigo Meadow and several from their new album. The band finished the encore with “Young Men Dead” from their first album Passover.

This was not just a music concert, though. The show included a trippy light display that covered the stage with intense colors and altered patterns, creating a filter that spun around the band as they played. This was an experience I wish I could repeat. I will definitely see the Black Angels again.
