Wolf Alice puts on flawless show at Newport Music Hall

North London rock band Wolf Alice stormed into Columbus at the Newport Music Hall on their Visions of a Life tour. With Ellie Rowsell on vocals and guitar, Joff Oddie on guitar, drummer Joel Amey, and bassist Theo Ellis, the band put on a show that cannot be forgotten. Wolf Alice started their set with Heavenward from their newest album Visions of a Life, and the crowd was immediately hooked.

Ellie Roswell’s versatile vocals range from whispers to screams, and she describes her lyrics as a stream of consciousness method. Each song brings unpredictable turns, especially on You’re a Germ, which starts soft, but moves into a heavier and louder vocal range. It’s surprising and inspiring to hear such a bold voice from such a small-framed frontwoman. Current hit “Don’t Delete the Kisses” begins in a rebellious manner and turns into quiet whispering lyrics that resemble a rap.

The music wasn’t the only highlight of the show, though, as the band entertained the audience with grandiose gestures. Joff Oddie threw his guitar in the air and caught it several times; Theo Ellis took off his shirt; Ellie jumped into the crowd while her fans lifted her.

The fans were happy to see such a tight show. One guy in the audience said he never heard the band, and that he just came to check them out. After hearing a couple of their songs, he was glad he showed up for the jam. Other fans mentioned that they had heard the band play several times, but this show proved that Wolf Alice has improved their stage presence and confidence.

Overall, the members of Wolf Alice were fearless and solid, and it was clear that they have been around for a while. They played a flawless set with 19 songs, including a quick encore of songs Blush and Giant Peach.

Wolf Alice continues their tour and are playing several festivals this summer.
