COLUMBUS/CLEVELAND EXCLUSIVES INTERVIEWS MIDWEST

COLUMBUS: One on One with Brit Floyd’s Damian Darlington

This week coming into Columbus is Brit Floyd. They play Friday night at Express Live! on Neil Avenue. Here at GroundSounds, we had the chance to sit down, and talk over the phone with the musical director Damian Darlington, who also is the band’s lead guitarist and lead vocals. Brit Floyd is a cover band that covers the great Pink Floyd’s music. They travel around the world showing people the great Pink Floyd experience.

1. Where and when did you begin as a musician?

“Well my family was really into music. My whole family played some sort of instrument. I grew up as the youngest, and it was all just kind of there for me, started playing guitar at 11.”

2. So, how did you pick playing guitar?

“My brothers definitely. They were all playing guitar, so I naturally picked up playing right along with them. It was kind of something I looked up to them and followed what they did.”

3. When did you start listening to Pink Floyd?

“Oh had to be when The Wall came out. That was the first album that I listened to by them, which may be a downer when you think about it.”

4. What other music did you listen to at the time or when you were growing up?

“Well Pink Floyd and Yes were some of the big ones.  I was listening to a lot of the bands performing at the top of the charts, too. Also, the big hair bands that played more pop.”

5. How did you meet the band or how did you guys come together?

“Most of the band I had been working with for years, so that helped that I knew most of them going into making Brit Floyd. Some came through networking as you have with this industry.”

6. How is tour life like? What is the daily routine going to a show for you guys?

“Usually starts about 9am at site, where the crew starts setting up the stage for that night. We get everything set ready to go for show. We have usually some type of meal for the crew.

7. How do you unwind or relax from tour?

“Coming back we usually are with our families due to traveling for months and months at a time. We do not get much time with our family. Each of us have different activities or hobbies that we all do.”

8. What is your favorite if you had to pick? Guitar or Vocals?

“Hmm. Guitar or Vocals? I like both. I started playing guitar first, but I do love singing and what comes with that. I would say Guitar because I started with that, and I will always consider myself a guitar player.”

9. So I want to ask this last question because I think we all need to read a little more, What is your favorite book or author?

“I really love the Lord of the Rings series. I really like J.R.R. Tolkien as a writer. I like to read a lot of Sci-Fi, so anything in that genre I would probably suggest.”

A great conversation with Damian and getting to know him as a musician and a person a little bit more.  Go follow us at GroundSounds on Youtube, Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. You can also check out Brit Floyd on Facebook, YouTube, and Twitter!
