Favorite Camera(s):

For digital I’d have to say the Canon 1DX. I personally don’t own one, but I’ve rented it for a couple of shoots and it’s such an amazing camera. For film, I’d say the Hasselblad X Pan II. I just love panoramas and the X Pan is super fast for a panoramic camera, it doesn’t need to rotate to capture the image and has a really fast shutter up to a 1000th.

Favorite Lenses:

I absolutely love the Canon 100mm f2.8L Macro IS USM lens. It’s fast and delivers amazing bokeh, comparable to, if not better than the Canon 85mm and 50mm lenses and it cost way less than those both. Plus, the 100mm lens has image stabilization and shoots macro. It’s a great portrait and close-up lens.

Years Shooting Professionally:

I picked up a camera when I was 15 but didn’t start shooting professionally until I was 18. I’m 30 now, so 12-years. Wow, time flies!

Most Memorable Shot:

Man, that’s a tough one. There are so many memorable shots that I will never forget but I’d have to say a photo I took at Iguassu Falls on my recent trip to Brazil. It was so surreal just being there, and I will never forget that experience. Getting to shoot photos there was a once in a lifetime opportunity.

What is it about photography that inspires you?

The ability to express myself and share that with others, and hopefully it inspires them to do the same with whatever motivates them in life and makes them happy.

How did you get involved with Cloud Cult?

It was by chance, the cosmos just aligned. In a nutshell, I became a big fan of Cloud Cult back in 2007, during a really tough-transitional time period in my life and their music really connected with me. I went on their site and saw they were on tour and playing a show in Pittsburgh but there were two venues listed for the same day. So I emailed the generic email address on their site and asked which one it was. Expecting I wouldn’t get a response, Craig Minowa (the front man of the band) emailed me back. I was really surprised to hear from him. I asked if I could take some pictures of the show I was attending and he said, they were actually looking to have a group portrait done because they recently added a new member. He asked to see some of my work and I sent him over my portfolio. A couple weeks later and I ended up shooting a group of them before their show in Pittsburgh. They liked my work and I’ve been touring and shooting all of their PR photos for them since.

Advice to aspiring photographers?

Photograph subjects and things you are passionate about. Don’t do it for the money. I never planned on being a photographer, I just loved doing it and over time it just worked out that way. Although school helps, you don’t need a degree to be a great photographer. Practice, practice, practice and learn from your mistakes. Pursue your dreams and the rest will follow.
