Canadian country powerhouse Marshall Dane returns with “Somebody Somewhere,” an upbeat yet reflective anthem that reframes loss through gratitude and strength. Rooted in North Americana and country-pop influences, the track celebrates the enduring power of love, honouring the people who shaped us and continue to travel with us long after they’re gone.
Originally sparked during a four-and-a-half-hour writing session with songwriter Matt Rogers, the only idea that survived was a simple phrase that would later become the song’s soaring chorus. “We let the song sit,” Dane explains. “Until I took that great hook and brought it to Rosanne Baker Thornley. Together we turned a sombre set of chorus lyrics into an empowering song about the power of love.”
“Somebody Somewhere” is deeply personal for Dane. The song was inspired by a picture of his best friend, whom he lost at 16, that sits on his studio desk. “I’m not sad when I see his picture,” he shares. “I’m empowered to know that I was lucky enough to love a best friend so much that he continues to travel with me along my journey. Even though all I have are some memories and some pictures, what’s held in those is a love that remains.”
Built around a dynamic live-band energy, the track steadily expands in scope and spirit. Dane intentionally brought in musicians he’s performed with on stage to capture genuine chemistry in the studio. “You can feel my boys smiling and their positive energy all over this recording,” he says. “I wanted to make events out of every section so the energy keeps building.” The result culminates in a soaring, no-compromise outro that’s complete with Dane’s signature, free-spirited ad libs.
Raised in a family of musicians as the son of a preacher, Dane has earned five Country Music Association of Ontario nominations for Male Artist of the Year and continues to carve out his own lane in Canadian country music. His 2024 single “No Need To Speak” earned praise from SiriusXM’s Top of the Country, reached #1 on Yangaroo’s Top Country Download chart, and climbed to #10 on both the Billboard Canada Top CANCON and Most Active Indies charts.
1. What did you enjoy most about the creation of this new release?
Writing it…and bringing in the band. — writing with Rosanne Baker Thornley is an absolute pleasure. I get excited with anticipation when we write, because as with Somebody Somewhere…finding the perfect lyrics to say how I feel is a beautiful challenge that most songwriters these days don’t seem to have the patience or skill for… but with Rosanne….we have a process that doesn’t’ stop diving for lyrics…good lyrics aren’t good enough…great lyrics are what I want…and that doesn’t happen willy nilly….ya gotta fight for that kinda gold….it takes patience….strength to lift heavy rocks … and a desire to connect…that allows us to find the hidden lyrics that make all the difference in a song…and how it feels to everyone who listens.
Similarly, the recording of the band was 100% by design….these players were handpicked not just because of their skill, but because of their attitude towards music. They don’t just play. Anybody can play. It’s a very particular player that is also an artist…a builder..a creator…with an ego …a sense of pride…craftsmanship..coupled with a curiosity about music itself. These players still love to play like imaginative kids…with adult skills….This combo allows the recording to soak up their energy and positive love…and it shows when they play.
2. Share a nugget of advice that has resonated with you most over the years.
“There is no heavy traffic out there on the extra mile”…and “It’s all about a good hang”…. Most people stop long before the extra mile even starts….that’s where the generic, middle ground, mainstream sits…in the “good enough” zone. I don’t live there…not with my music, not with my life. Out on the extra mile, where the crowd disperses, you can see, feel, smell, and taste the freedom of imagination. As for the second quote…everybody can count and play…but some do it with enjoyment..fun…happiness…love….I’d rather find half the licks and all of the vibe:)
3. Who would be your dream artist/band to co-headline a tour with?
I’d love to do a tour with Stapleton, Urban or Stephen Wilson Jr….also Maestro:) Also maybe Julian Taylor cuz he’s local and cool:)
4. What sets your music apart from others in your genre?
I’m not sure….I don’t listen to others in my genre….at least not new artists…Probably the same thing that sets me apart in the rest of my life….the way I approach each day…each task…100% in! Again…I find most people are 100% of the 50% of themselves they’re comfortable with…They do it until it is too hard…I’m 100% me…uncomfortable and all.
5. Tell us what your favourite song is at the moment and why.
It’s a toss between KID by Stephen Wilson Jr. and Shine…written recently by Rosanne Baker Thornley and myself. Kid is solid storytelling and lyric writing at its best….It’s not everyone’s cup of tea….but it’s what I like to drink. And Shine…straight up…I’d rather listen to this new song R and I wrote cuz again…the lyrics are striking, and stop people in their tracks…makes them think…”There are things in life you’ll face on your own…there are places you’ll wind up far from home….there’s people you meet you can’t change…and there’s times you’ll have to walk away.” – coming soon:)
