Welcome to the ‘Weekly Grind’ where GroundSounds Editor-in-Chief Jake Craney recaps the week in music, featuring the latest album releases, tracks, and recommendations. Plus, he keeps you up to date on GroundSounds’ exclusive music news and interviews.

The last two weeks have again been strong weeks for releases. 2013 is off to a hectic pace with new tunes and the vast majority have been really solid.

Lately I’ve been rockin three albums:

1. Collider by Cartel.

Cartel has returned with an incredibly strong album full of exactly what you were hoping for from the band. It’s got hooks, it’s got energy, and it’s got purpose. As expected, great windows-down music. Check out “Mosaic”

2. Goes Without Saying by Surprises.

Surprises (Brooks Paschal) has released an album full of fantastic songs. No flowery adjectives needed, just let the music speak for itself. Stream the entire album and purchase here:

If you listen to the opener “Freeze Frame,” you’ll probably be compelled to listen to the whole thing. If you’re in a hurry or have a bad case of ADD, be sure to listen to “Mouth,” “Anticipation,” and “Fire.” Gold, GOLD I tell you!

3. Devil by Lydia

Lydia is back with another quality album. If you haven’t checked out this band yet, you’re missing out. Watch the music video for the opener “The Exit” right here:

GroundSounds video interviews revved back up recently. We posted our interview with Paper Route as well as a great print interview with The Basics. Royal Teeth video will be up soon, and this week we filmed an interview with Zach from the up-and-coming punk band The Braces. Next week, we’ll be filming interviews with Faulkner and Cayucas.
