Singaporean artist iNCH, while small in stature, has never been afraid to venture into the discomforting umbra of artistry to push her own limits and challenge perceptions.  One can imagine iNCH as a musical nomad – having spent time in New York and Los Angeles, before re-settling in Singapore in 2015 – with the spirit animal of a “MouseDeer”, endangered, private and mysterious, yet when revealed, is honest and vulnerable.  Such unpredictability makes iNCH all the more an exciting paradox to embark on a musical voyage with.

She is set to release her new EP Letters to Ubin on September 2, and we’re thrilled to premiere her brand new track “Breakbone” today. The song is a confident and contemplative stroll though a musical landscape that leaves the listener impressed and clamoring for more.

iNCH on the new track:

“The word “breakbone” comes from the term Breakbone fever. While I was living on the remote island of Pulau Ubin, I lived next to a cemetery. It’s a very calm, serene place, and naturally, you ponder about the death while you feed the tropical mosquitoes. These two things, made me think about a “friend” of mine that passed away from dengue fever. You see, if someone you loved and cared for passed away, the grieving process is pretty straightforward. It sucks, you love them, and you’ll miss them. But if someone you didn’t have a great relationship with passed on, the grieving process is much more complicated. I still bore a grudge and never got to say goodbye, and this song was a way for me to let go.

The producer, Evan Low & I sampled sounds from the island and wanted to recreate my moment of struggling with forgiveness. My personal favourite moment of the song is the flugelhorn solo. It took us a while to find someone as specific as a flugelhorn player, but it was all worth it. Why a flugelhorn? Well, in the military, I’ve been told that the flugelhorn is the choice instrument used to salute a fallen comrade.”
