Oliver Kennan is a New York City-based indie-soul artist and bandleader. Oliver has become known in the NY music scene for his infectious energy onstage and hisremarkably tight 7-piece contemporary soul band. His influences range from Otis Redding to Arcade Fire, Betty Davis to Radiohead, and Wilson Pickett to Amy Winehouse. Oliver is a retro soul performer with one foot planted firmly in the 21st century, a celebration of the past and present.

Today we are thrilled to premiere his new video for “The One” – streaming below! Impressive is an understatement. The video is a cool look inside the studio, with a fantastic ensemble performance. Kennan’s crisp, soulful vocals are a welcome throwback, guiding the feel-good track. If this is what we can expect from his upcoming album Oh Boy, we’re in for a treat.

In his own words:

The One’ is about that state of infatuation when you just can’t get someone off your mind. It can be like a sweet kind of torture that you create but can’t escape. I think it’s a feeling that almost everyone can relate to and writing the song was like creating a place outside of myself where I could put those emotions. It was the first song I wrote where I really felt like I had found my voice.

Writing ‘The One’ allowed me to finally take a big batch of songs that seemed so different and view all those stories through the same lens. This music video is actually a smaller piece of a short film that we made called ‘I Hate You, Please Come Back’. The film was about the about the same breakup which the song was written about, so we ended up also cutting a studio edit. We tracked all the parts of this song to tape in one day. We really wanted to capture the specifics and the fun of the session.
