Veteran musicians Aslyn and Kalen Nash were well into their own solo careers prior to meeting and falling in love. Aslyn had notched two records, Lemon Love (Capitol Records) and The Dandelion Sessions (Lemonade Records), while also landing a spot as touring keyboardist and backup singer for Kesha. Kalen, singer-guitarist for Athens, GA, indie/roots-rockers Ponderosa, eventually saw his band signed to New West Records, for whom he recorded the critically acclaimed Midnight Revival with legendary producer Joe Chiccarelli (The Strokes, Real Estate, Cherry Glazerr).

The husband-and-wife team met around 2008 and married in 2011, but were so busy with their own projects they hadn’t really considered making music together. Eventually, the loneliness of the road led them to consider a different path. “I remember a phone call when I was out with Kesha and Kalen was on tour with Ponderosa,” recalls Aslyn. “We were a country apart and hadn’t seen each other in months. I told him that we needed to start collaborating so, at the very least, we could see each other more often.”

So they formed DEGA, a place where they could shed any preconceived notions about their past work (Kalen’s charmingly melancholic Southern indie rock, and Aslyn’s infectious blend of folk & piano pop) and explore new sounds—in particular, anthemic, synth-anchored indie pop. The combination of their two talents is truly a beautiful marriage of styles.

Today we’re excited to premiere their cover of Drake’s “Passionfruit” – streaming below! It’s a chill, cool spin on the hit song that has some skillful and unique touches. This is the absolute perfect track to kick up your feet and relax to.

In their own words:

“When we were on tour with Washed Out, Ernest asked us to learn “Passionfruit” to perform it with him as part of his set.  He didn’t end up adding it to his set list, so we started covering it live in our show. After touring it for a while, we wanted to change it up some more so we collaborated with our friend and producer Prinzly in Brussels on the track.” – Aslyn Nash
