SF Bay Area indie pop/folk punk outfit Little Shrine are getting ready to release their sophomore record, The Good Thing About Time (out April 17). Little Shrine, who began informally in 2014, are a band created out of necessity. Though each member currently performs in other projects, when they first came together in 2014, the songs Jade Shipman wrote didn’t have a home. Finding their alchemy and songs too sweet to let go, the band finally cemented their commitment when they released their mini-album Wilderness in October 2017, the contents of which garnered acclaim from both Magnet and The Big Takeover.

Encapsulating the wily and wiry energy of Ted Leo’s early solo releases, the punky whip-crack of Carrie Brownstein’s vocals, and carrying the torch for their robust songcraft The Good Thing About Time manages to imbue the punk aesthetic in its energetic strumming, while also maintaining the delicacy and subtlety necessary to highlight the myriad lush string arrangements coursing through the songs. We are excited to premiere the amazing new track “Can’t Take It With You” – streaming below! The song immediately brims with bouncy energy. It’s one that hits you right away and stays with you all day. We are thrilled to be able to share this with you!

On the track:

“When I wrote this song, I was thinking about impermanence – how everything is temporary. This idea can bum me out, but at the time, it felt freeing. Somewhere in there is an optimism.

If everything is temporary, if all we know we have is today, then we have no reason to keep anything in reserve. When we die, anything we’ve saved up won’t belong to us, including all our gifts and all the love we feel for others. We don’t need to conserve for some day in the future. There’s a freedom in that.

Also, I think we can be gatekeepers – false beliefs about what is possible in our lives can hold us back. Yet, this may be the only life we get. How do we cast off those limits and live more fully?

I don’t have an answer… Maybe each day we do our best, knowing we will make mistakes. And the next day, we try again — to express the love we feel for others, to be more truthful about who we are, and to be compassionate about our shared human foibles. It’s not that we get it “right” all the time, it’s that we care enough to try again. And if we can, maybe it’s best to express our gifts and our love right now, when we have the opportunity.

When I say this stuff out loud, it sounds lofty. It’s just a song. But personally, I think we need music to make sense of being human. Or at least I do.”
