Suit of Lights is the solo project of Joe Darone, who cut his teeth opening for The Ramones and Echo and the Bunnymen. Under his new moniker he crafts intricate, arty power pop that pulls influence from new wave, prog and more. He’s previously had Trevor Dunn from Mr. Bungle, Steve Pedulla from Thursday, and Jamie Egan from Catch 22 and Streetlight Manifesto contributing to the project, which gives you a sense of what circles Darone is operating in.

Named after the traditional bullfighting costume (Traje de Luces), Darone considers Suit of Lights as a metaphor for life’s juxtaposition of beauty and brutality and reflects that worldview in the music. Joyful pop melodies live alongside somber ones, optimistic lyrics alongside sardonic ones.

Darone draws upon an eclectic range of influences including Art-rock, 60’s pop, punk, new wave, metal, and baroque pop in the over 50 songs he has written. In his latest album, Hide and Seek, Suit of Lights’ DNA continues to expand and evolve. We are honored to be able to premiere the album in full today on GroundSounds! With Hide and Seek, Darone has brilliantly melded genres into a cohesive, impressive album. Let us know what you think!

In his own words:

“Hide and Seek is an album of games. Our protagonist ‘The Great Pretender,’ also known as ‘God’, is playing hide and seek forever and ever. What ties the music to the concept is a sense of adventure, and change. Life is constant changing, as is the soundtrack.”
