GroundSounds recently caught up with Dusty Sheehan of Santa Cruz, CA’s Stellar Corpses. Playing what they call “morbidly fun punk rock,” the guys from Stellar Corpses are embarking on a nationwide tour, hitting Los Angeles Saturday, February 23rd. Check out http://www.facebook.com/StellarCorpses/events to see where you can catch the band live!

Stream the title-track from the album Dead Stars Drive-In right here!

How would you describe your sound for new listeners?

It’s kind of like if Elvis and Sid Viscous were on an episode of True Blood.

What was it like working with members of AFI on this album?

Hunter was really nice to us and easy to work with, although we ended up eating some pretty bad vegan food because of him. Jade kind of stayed behind the scenes and let his talent speak louder than his words. In both cases it was quite an honor to work with them and get a glimpse into their creative process.

Tell us about the writing process for the album. What was your goal for Dead Stars Drive-In?

We had been working on some of the songs for years (like Vampire Kiss) and some of them were written only a short time before recording (like War of the Worlds). Our goal was to make the best possible album within our power. We wanted it to rock and be fun to listen to.

What inspires you lyrically?
Life and relationships, whether they are things I’ve experienced or things I observe in other people or sometimes in movies and books.

The title-track, which we’ve got up for streaming, is a fun song with a classic feel to it. The bass really jumps out of the speakers and the chorus has a great punch. What is the story behind this song?

Dead Stars Drive-In is all about dead movie stars and rock stars and how they will live forever in our hearts and minds. That classic 50’s feel is something we all appreciate and admire. It’s an interesting time period because we look back on it with such reverence, but in reality there was a lot of darkness there. The song was meant to show both sides of that coin.

How difficult is it to travel with a string bass?

It’s a big giant pain in the ass. I wouldn’t recommend it.

If you could put together a dream tour, which bands would you want to share the stage with?

Elvis, The Ramones and Iron Maiden. You said dream tour!

Speaking of touring, what are your upcoming plans?

We hit the road this week for a five week US tour in support of the Dead Stars Drive-in single.

What is a fun fact about you guys that nobody knows?

The intro story on Train Wreck is Dusty’s dad! We didn’t really announce that or anything, but his name is in the liner notes.
