New Jersey’s Carter released ‘A Ghost Running Through Shadows’ today. GroundSounds caught up with Matthew Rauch to discuss the EP, inspiration, and what’s next. Check out the interview below and grab the new EP here.

Tell us about A Ghost Running Through Shadows. How long have you been working on these songs and what was your writing process like?

One or two of the songs on the EP have been written for years. The others were written while recording. My writing process is really quick. I come up with an idea in 5-10 minutes with the guitar, and a melody on vocal. I then immediately write the lyrics. If I don’t like something or decide to change something I do it while recording.

I love the name A Ghost Running Through Shadows. Where did the title come from?

Thank you. Those are lyrics from a song that was originally supposed to be on the record called “Learn to Grieve.”

The first song released “Seven Times Two” is one of my favorite new tracks. What inspired the song?

That song basically came out of nowhere. The lyrics were a phrase I came up with while watching TV. I thought I heard someone say them on the television.

When I first heard “Seven Times Two,” it reminded me of certain Saves The Day and Juliana Theory songs I love. What bands or musicians influenced or impacted the style of music you create?

I liked those bands. I’m very influenced by classic rock of the late 60’s and early 70’s like, Led Zeppelin, The Beatles, Neil Young, and obscure things from that time period like, Spirit and Moby Grape. I also really love the band Television. I also like Soundgarden, and The Screaming Trees, from the grunge scene

“Steps” is a quick but powerful song. What is the story behind that track?

That song is about your belief gas tank being empty. It’s about someone. They had a huge effect on me and my life, but ultimately let me down. It’s about slowly building myself up to believe in that person, and their memory again.

When did you start making music? What did your first song sound like?

I started playing music when I was 12-13. My first instrument was the bass. I had a few bass lessons and after each lesson my teacher would give me homework. Instead I’d right a song with lyrics, and play the bass like a guitar. After about three lessons he said I think you should just teach yourself how to play guitar. It looks like that’s what you want to do.

What are your plans for the Summer and the rest of 2014?

In the middle of July I’m going to start recording song for an LP. I’m also going to start playing shows very soon.

Where is the best place to stay updated with you online?

The best place is Facebook www.facebook.com/cartersound and Twitter @cartersounds

I know you’re a hockey fan from NJ/NY…who is your team? Which NHL stadium would you say has the best atmosphere? (PS. Go Kings Go!)

I’m a New Jersey Devils fan. They had some great seasons while I was growing up. unfortunately safe for 2012 when we lost in the Stanley Cup Finals to your LA Kings, who are by far the best hockey team on the planet. There was no chance the NY Rangers were going to win. I love the Prudential Center, “where the Devils play,” but you can’t beat Madison Square Garden. Especially after they renovated. They don’t call it the most famous arena for nothing.
