Interview: Tru Sav talks DOI Tour & musical inspirations

GroundSounds recently caught up with Tru Sav, a dope hip-hop collaboration coming out of Sacramento CA. They recently participated on the Declaration of Independents Tour and have some big projects lined up.

Who/what is Tru Sav?

Reaz: “Tru Sav” is a lifestyle of living and also a frame of mind. Tru Sav Ent is a hip-hop record label based out of Sacramento, California. Tru Steez is the newest hip-hop group signed to Tru Sav Ent comprised of two artists: Young Harm & Reaz!

What inspired you to pursue music?

Reaz: Music has been a big part of my life since I was a child. I used to beat books with drumsticks and record songs off the radio to write down lyrics from my favorite songs. Songwriting became more important to me as the years passed. The first time I performed my songs and felt the reactions and love from the crowd is when I knew what and where I wanted to be.

Young Harm: My Dad inspired me, 1st and foremost as a young kid, It wasn’t till 14 though when I fell in love with the therapeutics of the writing/creating process

What was your experience like on the DOI Tour/IES?

Reaz: The DOI Tour was unbelievably awesome. It started out as a small investment to do a great show at a nice venue, winning the Fresno leg was humbling and exciting. I learned and networked like crazy at the IES conference and got to perform in LA for the first time. The experience, confidence and memories it gave us will never be forgotten.

Young Harm: I had a great time, learned alot, and its always a good sight seeing other young motivated individuals perfecting a craft.

What is the NorCal music scene like now?

Reaz: The Nor Cal music scene is very vibrant and political at the same time. There is an overwhelming amount of talented artists up here that struggle with the same issues but fail to band together to solve them. Some cities are working hard to change that like Auburn, Sacramento and Oakland but the pride that artists, promoters and some venues have get in the way of a thriving music scene.

How would you describe your music?

Reaz: The music Tru Steez is coming with is conscious, backpack party music. Some of our music is catchy and some of it is very thought provoking. We have fun and like our fans to have fun too. You will find a lot of emotion and passion in our music because we bring our lives into our sound.

Young Harm: Our music is a melting pot of our early work mixed with the growth & knowledge we’ve gained over the years, I came from a Rock/Punk backround so that side of me comes out in my verses, and Reaz always been a true hip hop head, so the fusion we create when it all comes together is unlike any other

Who are some of your influences?

Reaz: Most of my influences lately have been the artists around me. Shot out to the First Dirt camp for showing a lot of us the bigger aspect of this business. I grew up listening to local talent like The Cuf, The Cawz, & The Righteous Movement. Now I’m into all good music no matter where it’s from, who it’s from or what other people think about it, local, national or global.

Young Harm: To name a few:

Blink182
Sublime
Red Hot Chili Peppers
Rebelution
Nirvana
Eminem

What’s coming up next for you (albums, videos, tour ect.) ?

Reaz: We are about to go on a California-Nevada tour. We will be performing in 9 cities starting on November 6 in San Diego. Steezin Ova Cali is the name of the tour and we plan to take it national next year. Tru Steez is getting some buzz so you will most likely see an album in early 2015!

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

Reaz: I would like to collaborate with artists of different genres as well as hip hop artists. Some artists I would like to work with are Damien Marley, Chris Brown, Andre 3000, El-P, Nas, Tyler The Creator, Jhene Aiko… the list goes on…

Young Harm: I personally would like to collaborate with Rick Rubin, his vision for music and its overall structure in songs/albums is mind blowing
