INTERVIEWS ORLANDO

INTERVIEW: Cathedral Bells

One of our favorite discoveries from last fall, bedroom project Cathedral Bells, has been pretty busy since we covered their single “A Passing Phase.” That track is now on a debut EP, out tomorrow on Good Eye Records, and is teased by two new atmospheric pools of ethereal shoegaze/dream-pop perfection in “Time Capsule” and “Ethereal Shadow.”

To celebrate the release of Cathedral Bells, we sent its figurehead Matt Messore some interview questions. Check it out and order the EP on cassette or add it to streaming here.

Hi Cathedral Bells! Congrats on your new EP. Can you tell us a little more on who you are and how you first got into making music?

Hello ✌🏻 We are a shoegaze duo (Matt + David) currently living in Florida. We both starting playing music at an early age in our lives, also we both are multi-instrumentalists with drums being our first instrument 🥁

What’s your songwriting process like?

Usually starts with setting a tempo and making drum patterns, then making riffs and sequencing. Ideas will keep shifting until it’s polished up.

What was your inspiration behind writing the EP?

It took over a year working on the EP, and with this came a lot of change in my life. I wrote about the transitions and uncertainty of life. The song “Cemetery Surf” was a cover by a bedroom DIY artist in Europe under the name Teen Beams.

Who are some of your biggest influences/favorite artists?

The Cure, Jesus and The Mary Chain, The Cleaners From Venus, New Order.

Any new artists/venues/purveyors of the arts you could turn our readers onto

I came across a DIY dream pop band from San Francisco called Dark Tape, which we’ll be playing with in April.

Where can we follow you and where can our readers catch you live next?

We’re on Spotify and social media, and our next shows will be on the west coast in April with Foliage.

Any parting thoughts? Open platform.

Thanks for reaching out!
